Innovation Fest Almaty: 2 weeks, 8 events, 5000 people


The Innovation Festival #innfestCA was a two week festival that lasted from early to mid June 2018 and included as many as 5000 people attending 8 events in and around Almaty, Kazakhstan. Along with its partners, this event has been co-organised by the I4C Central Asia Hub. Live coverage of the various events making up #innfestCA can be found below. They include:

17 June: Ethno Innovations Day

June 17 Ethno Innovations Day was a unique event for Central Asian artisans and designers to exchange ideas, and promote their innovative works across a diverse audience. This event featured a fashion show, display of leather goods, wood and metal work, and an open market for shopping.

15-17 June: GoViral Festival

This three-day festival took place at the open format space, SmArt.Point and included thousands of attendees participating in various events led by experts from across the world. Speakers disseminated innovative ideas in the fields of media, business, culture and technology around the theme “Interlaced: the threads of innovation, interaction and inspiration that unite us.” Innovation for Change invited panelists from Latin America, Africa, and East Asia to lead sessions and master classes on campaigning in closing civic space, what is social impact, technology for good in the social sector, design thinking, innovative funding models and crowdfunding, and the use of the sharing economy in civil society.

15 June: Museum Night

The night of June 15th saw the opening up of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve Museum “Issyk” for an evening of historical quests, classes, performances by local musicians and dancers, arts and artisans fair to purchase locally crafted products and a dance party! The Issyk Museum is famous for its large burial mounds dating back to the Bronze Age, inside one of which the famous “Golden Man” was discovered.

13-15 June: Insights into Development Conference

On June 13 and 14, the ARGO conference “Development Stories: Insights into Development” was held in Almaty. This year about 200 experts, representatives of civil society, international organizations, business, government bodies from Central Asia and CIS countries, Europe, USA, Latin America, North and South Africa, South and East Asia hosted a series of master classes, panel discussions, workshops and side-events with the aim of helping civil society groups, organisations, and social businesses improve their work and create more lasting impact.

13 June: Contemporary Art Exhibit

13 June, #innfestCA participants gathered at Esentai Gallery to view more than 30 works in various types – photo, video, painting, installation, and sculpture – made by artists all across Central Asia. The exhibition titled “Alternative Theses” is an opportunity for the development of critical thinking through visual and artistic imagery.

9-12 June: Make-a-thon for people with disabilities

Starting on 9 June, #innfestCA hosts a 72-hour make-a-thon, during which teams of inventors develop ideas to solve the problems of people with special needs. Some of last year’s winners invented a rehabilitation exoskeleton for a disabled athlete, a set of glasses with motion sensors enabling a blind woman to walk without an aide, a prosthetic leg made out of easy to find and replicate materials, and a device enabling those in wheelchairs to easily put on their shoes. The 2018 winners will be announced on 12 June.

10 June: Plakemaking Festival for Urban Communities

The Festival of Urban Communities took place from 10am to 10pm, 10 June. During the Festival, there were arts and crafts, a playground for children, food vendors, artisans selling their locally made products, and artists – dancers, painters, performers – from the local community.

This space for artists, activists, and social and creative entrepreneurs was aimed at educating informed citizens who consider the city “their own”, and therefore, relate it to collective public property while also encouraging community members through the creation of small architectural forms and landscaping, to solve the problems of the city with a lack of greenery.

7 June 2018: #InnfestCA launch & Media Tour

The Innovation Festival launched today with a Media Tour hosted by Internews featuring leaders in graphic design, data visualisation, and media from around the region providing valuable skills to journalists, citizen journalists, bloggers, social media practitioners, and students in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
